FAQs for Primary Schools
About this resource
This mental health resource has been developed for Primary School aged children in Kent, from Reception to Years 1 - 6 (Key Stages 1 and 2)
This resource has been developed by the NHS in Kent, with assistance from teachers, our children's mental health provider and KCC educational psychologists.
Nothing! This resource is completely FREE to all Kent Primary Schools.
F.R.E.D is an acronym for the four practical ways in which children can look after their own good mental health.
Food - eating the right foods
Rest - getting enough sleep
Exercise - being active
Digital - managing time online
Fantastic Fred and his professor will deliver a series of entertaining experiments and demonstrations in an interactive and memorable way. The performance will include facts and examples of why the human body is fantastic and practical tips on how to maintain good mental health. Adapted for both Key Stage 1 and 2 age groups, the performance is suitable for primary school children in Reception and Years 1 to 6.
The Key Stage 1 level performance is able to be adapted for children with specific learning needs. Please highlight this requirement to the team during the booking process and we'll ensure this is brought to the attention of the events team in advance of our visit.
Yes, The Fantastic Fred Experience is completely accessible and the floor is level for wheelchair users
Additional resources have been developed to reinforce F.R.E.D in the classroom and at home and will be available on the Good Mental Health Matters website soon.
The Fantastic Fred Experience can be booked throughout the school year, subject to availability, but the mobile pop-up classroom is available from March to October only, due to unsuitable weather conditions during the Winter months.
We are only able to include the pop-up classroom in the Experience during the months of November, December, January and February if your school has inside space large enough to house the structure, for e.g. in a large hall.
Schools of 230 pupils or more are able to book the Fantastic Fred Experience. The maximum number of children who can take part per day is 380.
Due to popular demand for the Fantastic Fred Experience, schools with pupils below a number of 230 will need to call the Fantastic Team, on 01892 750900, to discuss their booking in further detail.
Hosting The Fantastic Fred Experience at your school
The Fantastic Fred Experience will be available on weekdays during school term time. The campaign will run for 2 years from 1st April 2019.
The experience will remain on site at each school for one day, subject to the size of your school. If you are acting as a hub school, for other schools to attend the experience, this may be extended.
Please complete the booking enquiry form and one of our team will be in touch to discuss your preferred dates and to schedule a site survey.
We'll arrange a convenient time for one of our team to visit your school and carry out a site survey. The survey is necessary for our risk assessment and will take approximately half an hour. Once the survey has been completed, we will confirm your booking and event date
We will need an outdoor space about half the size of a tennis court, situated on soft ground. A playing field or other large grassed area is perfect.
We will discuss the possibilities with you, these include attending the event at a nearby hub school or running the experience inside your school.
If your school is happy to become a ‘hub’ school, you will be able to invite pupils from other schools to a Fantastic Fred Experience at your school.
A hub school is a school prepared to host the event for other schools. As demand for the Fantastic Fred Experience is high, we are encouraging all larger schools to invite as many local schools as possible in their area to participate in The Fantastic Fred Experience.
We ask that any cancellations or postponements be made at least 28 days before your booked date. We will do our best to accommodate a new date for you, subject to availability.
On the day of your event
The Fantastic Fred event team will need to access your school at 7am on the day of your event. It is important that someone from your school is available on site to meet them at this time.
If we are able to easily access your school's electricity supply that would be helpful but it is not essential. The Fantastic Fred Experience is fully self-contained and has its own generator to inflate the dome and provide lighting and heating if required.
Our event crew and performers will need access to toilet facilities in the school.
The pop up classroom will take 2 hours to set up and we aim to start the first performance at 9.30am.
We plan to deliver up to approximately 6 performances each day and will discuss timings with you in advance of your event.
We can accommodate approximately 60 children in each performance.
The number of performances throughout the day is subject to the number of pupils at each school. We would welcome the chance for parents to also see a performance once all pupils have been through the experience. This offer would be at the school's discretion due to the organisation required. We would be happy to discuss this with you during the booking process.
In the event of bad weather and particularly high winds, we may need to unavoidably cancel your event at relatively short notice. We will notify you as soon as possible and endeavour to reschedule your event on a suitable alternative date. The dome structure could be housed inside, if there is a suitable indoor position at your school. This can be talked through during your site visit.
